According to her doctor, former Dance Moms star Abby Lee Miller – who withdrew from the popular lifetime series in 2017 before withdrawing from the condemnation – was diagnosed with cancer after feeling back pain and numbness.
Although she recently received emergency surgery to help prevent further paralysis, her 51-year-old health condition is still declining.
As her doctor said: “We haven’t gotten out of trouble.”
The Dance Moms alum has been preliminarily diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, a form of cancer that develops in the lymphatic system, after experiencing debilitating back pain and numbness in her limbs.
The diagnosis was made when the 51-year-old sought treatment for what she thought was an infection in her spine. Following an MRI, it was determined that immediate surgery was required as the former Lifetime star was at risk of paralysis or even death.
Abby underwent an operation on her spinal cord for a multi-level laminectomy at about 1 a.m. Tuesday, April 17.
“It was not an infection, it was a type of a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma – it’s a type of a cancer,” Dr. Hooman M. Melamed, an orthopedic spine surgeon at Cedar Sinai Marina Del Rey Hospital who has been treating the star, told People.
“We’re getting an oncologist involved and we have to figure out what the next steps are as far as chemotherapy or radiation or more spine surgery.
Depending on the tumor type, depending on the sensitivity of the tumor – it just depends the type but I feel more than yes, she will undergo chemotherapy or radiation.”
While the physician said the dance instructor has “made some recovery in 24 hours, which is better than no recovery,” he cautioned that Abby is “still not out of the woods.”
“There’s a chance this can spread to any part of the body … this is probably coming from somewhere else,” he explained.
“We don’t know where the source is. Any tumor that spreads anywhere is automatically Stage 4, but we have not determined the stage yet.”
According to the doctor, Abby is currently recuperating in the ICU after a four-hour-long surgery.
“If we didn’t do something, she was going to die,” he said of the procedure. “Her blood pressure was bottoming out. She was not doing well.”
He added, “Nobody wants to end up thinking they’re going to be paralyzed for the rest of their life.
That’s a reality that’s facing all of these patients going into it. All you can do is pray and, as a surgeon, you maximize everything you can for the spinal cord to recover itself. I am hopeful.”
Abby’s cancer diagnosis comes just a week after she was hospitalized for a thyroid condition.
Prior to that, the outspoken TV personality entered into a halfway house in Long Beach, California to serve the remainder of her 366-day prison sentence for bankruptcy fraud.
As Celebuzz! previously reported, Abby was sentenced to one year and a day in federal prison in 2017, followed by two years of supervised release.
She was also fined $40,000 and ordered to pay $120,000 judgment, as well as provide a DNA sample relating to her felony charge.
The Reign Dance Productions owner reportedly lost about 100 lbs. while serving at the Victorville Federal Correctional Institution.
